Some companies discourage employees from accepting gifts from their clients and customers.
However gift exchanges between colleagues is usually
accepted and considered more like a internal family matter and may even
promote a relaxed work environment amongst employees.
Gift giving in the office can be fun and enjoyable as most gift
exchanges are. However some guidelines should be followed ensure that
office gift exchanges do not lead to bad feelings amongst colleagues.
Office politics can lead to unpleasant situations and no one wants to send the wrong impression by giving gifts that may not be appropriate.
Tips for giving gifts in your office
1. The purpose of exchanging gifts in the office is social interaction
and to build a sense of community spirit. Gift giving in the office should
not be considered as an opportunity to try and bribe your boss or
colleagues with expensive gift items. You can't buy friendship, at least
not the right kind of friendship.
2. When purchasing gifts for the office keep in mind the cost of the
gift. Many offices set a limit, for example no gifts above a certain
amount. Some even go beyond the maximum cost rule and clearly specify
the lower price as well. For example gifts should be between ten to
fifteen dollars.
Defining such limits is a sensible and fair way
office staff in participating in gift giving with their colleagues.
3. Spend some though when buying gifts. Don't rush into the store at the
last minute to purchase gifts.
Knowing something about the person for who you are buying a gift helps in selecting a gift that will indeed be appreciated.
4. When buying gifts for your office colleagues make sure you buy the gift that is for your colleague only. For example if you are buying a gift for a coworker Jane, then don't buy a gift for her husband or her children.
5. Stay away from buying personal items such as lingerie when buying gifts for office colleagues.
6. Perfume used by women is a personal use item. Unless you know the person well and what perfume they use don't buy personal cosmetic items. You may love a certain perfume but others may not share your taste.
7. Gag gifts may seem funny but should be avoided. Don't give gifts that will embarrass the recipient.

Gift wrapping does give your gift a kind of elegance. Don't hand over
your shopping bag.
Don't forget to include a signed gift card when
giving a gift. You will be surprised how many people include a gift card
and forget to sign it.
Office management should ensure that office gift giving is done so as
not to put undue pressure on their employees.
Rules such as setting a maximum monetary amount on
gift exchanges should be considered and implemented. Well planned gift
exchanges in the office can be a real moral booster for employees.
