GIFT ETIQUETTE - RECEIVING GIFTS

How to accept gifts with class!

When you receive a gift, regardless of what the gift occasion may be it is the responsibility of the person receiving the gift to behave in a manner that makes the gift giver happy and comfortable.

Money versus Love in today's society

Gift Giving CartoonOur society today appears to give more value to money than love!
Love and feelings for each other are now in many instances measured by the value of the gift one gives.

This is certainly not the true spirit of gift giving. The phrase, "its the thought that counts" today does not seem to hold much meaning for many people.

Here are some tips that should be considered by those receiving gifts from friends and family, regardless of the occasion.

The moment a gift is presented to you, the person giving you the gift should get the feeling that you really appreciate seeing the person and receiving his/her gift.

Work on sending the person away with the feeling that you were thrilled! to get their gift and truly appreciate it.

People spend a lot of time shopping for gifts. Shopping around for appropriate gifts not only cost money but can often be time consuming. No wonder gift coupons are becoming popular these days.

These days its not easy to decide what gift to purchase and for who. Being appreciated makes the person who gives you a gift feel that the time and money spent buying and looking for your gift, were well worth the effort.

When receiving gifts in a large gathering it is recommended that your reaction to receiving gift from various people not fluctuate to the extend that it becomes overly noticed by others. Girl Smiling with her gift

I don't mean you should not show your emotions by jumping with joy and hugging a loved one you are meeting after a long time. However treating someone who gives you an expensive gift differently than from the person who gave you a less expensive gift is not the impression you want people to get about you.

Regardless of the value of the gift you receive all gift givers should leave with the impression that their gift and presence was truly appreciated.

Thank you Notes

Sending thank you notes is a way of expressing your thanks for the gifts you received.  I have heard of people sending out thank you notes sometimes four a five months after an event. Kind of takes the true meaning away for a thank you note.

Always send a thank you note soon after the event. A simple thank you note received a few days after the event shows that you are an organized person.

Thank you notes should always be personalized, don't run off copies on a computer and send them out as a general announcement. Use proper names and always mention the gift you received and that you truly appreciated it. Make the person who receives your thank you not feel that you really appreciated the gift. A short line such as. " The red scarf matches my coat so much and I love it" will make the person who gave you the scarf feel great about the time they spent in choosing your gift.
